“DUT is not accepting walk-ins”: University rubbishes circulating statement

By Mcebo Makhaye

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has slammed the circulating statement which is allowing candidates to enter university’s premises for walk-ins and registrations, on Monday.

This follows a statement published on Sunday that had been doing rounds on social media masquerading as the “DUT statement”, which was calling pupils for walk-ins, parents, and students to report to the university for contact registrations.

This is a fake statement that was circulating on social media platforms on Sunday, 13 February 2022.

Furthermore, the “fake statement” also ensured all returning students that they will be allowed to move to their respective residences as from Monday, 14th of February.

Speaking to the Durban branch secretary of Student Representative Council (SRC) that is led by EFF Student Command (EFFSC), Sbongimenzi Mdlalose said they heard about the circulating statement, but they did not know the credibility of it.

In a statement released by DUT management on Monday, it said they condemned the spread of fake news and they distanced themselves from the so-called university statement.

“DUT has noted with disbelief the malicious fake news communique circulating on social media platforms. The university is not accepting walk-ins or conducting physical registration.

“Registration will continue to be online. Parents, students, staff and all DUT stakeholders are urged to only access university related communiques through the official DUT Communication platforms,” the statement reads.

In addition, the DUT said they only sent university’s information to students to their respective DUT4Life accounts.

It is understood that last week, on Friday, the university extended the online registration period by one week, meaning it will be closed on Friday,18 February 2022.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear who issued the statement, but it is alleged that the statement was shared by EFFCSC member, Nhlakanipho Maphalala to a student Facebook group called “DUT SRC Led By EFFSC”.
