Ntuzuma police arrested suspect, after allegedly robbed and shot pedestrian in KwaMashu

Ntuzuma police officers has nabbed a man who had allegedly robbed and shot a pedestrian in KwaMashu, north of Durban, on Tuesday afternoon.
A suspect, who cannot be named prior his court appearance was arrested in KwaMashu at 14: 50, after a victim of robbery who had been shot by the suspect divulged the culprit’s name to police.
This comes a month after an LGBTQI + community citizen, Sphamandla Khoza was allegedly murdered by Thando Mgenge, in Ntuzuma.
An eyewitness from KwaMashu section L, who asked to remain anonymous fearing for retaliation said he saw the suspect armed with a pistol robbed the 30-year-old victim.
“As I was heading to work, I saw a gang and a guy from my community carrying a handgun robbing and eventually shot the victim who was on his way to take a taxi in KwaMashu, on Friday at about 5am.” the source said.
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police spokesperson, Captain Thembeka Mbhele said a case of robbery and attempted murder has been opened in KwaMashu Police Station.
“The suspect was arrested on Tuesday afternoon at around 14:50 in KwaMashu L section. According to the victim, the suspect approached him and demanded the victim’s valuables but refused to give him of which he then shot him. Luckily, after being rushed to hospital, he woke up and gave the name of the suspect,” Mbhele said.
In an interview with the Durban University of Technology journalist (DUT), Siyabonga Mngoma who also resides in KwaMashu said there have been several incidents scattered across the policing precinct where pedestrians have been targeted.
“While this incident occurred last week, over the course of the year, we have had criminals target pedestrians. They often target lone pedestrians late at night or in the early hours of the morning,” Mngoma said.
Mngoma added that as the community of KwaMashu they are urging police to patrol their area to arrest criminals and he wished pedestrians, residents and visitors to where possible to walk in groups.
Mbhele said the victim is expected to appear in court soon, while the investigation on the matter is still ongoing.
